Arsenal are determined to land West Brom captain Jonny Evans ahead of Manchester City, reports the Mirror journalist Mark Irwin.

The Gunners have reportedly made the 29 year old the club’s number one priority when the transfer window opens in a few days time, but they will have a fight on their hands to sign the £25m rated centre back.

After losing out to Liverpool for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, City boss Pep Guardiola will likely set his sights on Evans to strengthen his defensive options. The centre half tried to force through a move to the Etihad last summer and has reportedly rejected a £100,000 a week deal to stay with the Baggies.

Last week West Brom manager Alan Pardew all but confirmed Evans’s departure next month, and it seems Arsenal will have to do some persuading to get the player to opt for a move to the Emirates instead.

The fact that the Northern Irish international would get regular first team football with the Gunners could be enough to sway his decision in favour of Arsenal, but the huge financial incentives of joining City, as well as the prospect of a Premier League medal, may be too much to turn down.
