Atletico Madrid will offer a contract to Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil in January, according to the Sun journalist Warren Haughton.

In an attempt that will surprise many, Atletico boss Diego Simeone is said to be keen on signing the German international despite his poor work rate, with the Argentine looking to recruit a creative player to replace Saul Niguez who could depart the Wanda Metropolitano this summer.

The Gunners are believed to be seeking to offload Ozil in January with a new contract now looking unlikely, but there is growing concern that the German will instead leave on a free transfer when his current deal expires at the end of the season.

The 29 year old has been linked with various clubs including Manchester United and Barcelona over the past several months but so far there has been no concrete interest with the the German’s contract demands proving a major stumbling block.

Ozil performed well for Germany on Friday night in the 0-0 draw against England, but he has begun the season sluggishly for the Gunners. The midfielder has so far scored one goal, and provided two assists in nine appearances for Arsenal.
