Arsenal are preparing to “open talks” with Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to Daily Mail journalist Sami Mokbel.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with the 22 year old over the past year, and they are said to be confident of landing the German international on a free transfer ahead of the likes of Juventus and Manchester City.

Goretzka is reportedly aware of Arsenal’s interest in him, but no discussions between the player and the London club can officially take place until January when he is in the last six months of his contract.

At that point, any club can hold talks with the midfielder. His performances at last summer’s Confederations Cup for Germany, and his subsequent form for Schalke at the start of this season, has increased interest in the German to even greater heights.

Four of the current Premier League top six are said to be tracking Goretzka, and despite the Gunners’s confidence in landing the player, it will be quite a coup if they do beat their rivals to his signature.
