The Argentinian under 20 international has been linked with Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, among other clubs, over the past year but it seems that the La Liga side are close to finalising the 20 year old’s signing. The player’s agent Rolando Zarate is in Madrid to put the finishing touches to the deal, Radio Mitre journalist Tomas Davila has revealed, and he was said to be in the stands for Atletico’s Copa Del Rey match against Elche on Wednesday night.
Martinez will likely become an Atletico player when the January transfer window opens after the club’s transfer bans is lifted. Mundo Deportivo report that the forward is likely to return to Racing Club on loan for a number of months before returning to Madrid to begin his career in Europe.
The Argentine only returned to first team action in mid October after missing the start of the season with a metatarsal injury. Since his return he has managed two goals in four games. He played for Argentina at the under 20 World Cup back in May, scoring two goals in three group matches.
