Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has denied that Ajax Director of Football Marc Overmars will be joining the Gunners.
Spanish publication AS reported on Tuesday that the deal for Overmars to make the switch to the Emirates at the end of the season was “nearing completion” but Wenger has denied that this is the case at a press conference today (quotes via the Metro):
“No, at the moment he’s director of Ajax. ‘We have been in touch, but not at the moment, no.”
AS reported that Wenger was staunchly opposed to a Director of Football being appointed by the Gunners, but despite his, Arsenal had offered a contract to Overmars.
The Dutchman, who played for the Gunners for three seasons before leaving for Barcelona, is said to be considering the proposed offer but hasn’t yet decided whether to take up the role.
If the report is accurate, and if Overmars does accept the deal, he would be Wenger’s right hand man dealing with transfers but the Frenchman would have the final say on signings and other footballing matters at the club.
