Ajax’s sporting director Marc Overmars has denied reports that he is set to be appointed to a position at Arsenal for the start of next season.
The first reports about the former Gunners player rejoining the club as a director of football came from Italy last week when website Tuttomercatoweb released an exclusive story about the Dutchman making the switch to the Emirates.
That was then followed by numerous reports in the English media which seemed to confirm that Overmars was indeed set to become a director in charge of transfer negotiations, above manager Arsene Wenger at the club.
The Dutchman has now however confirmed that the stories are not true, and that he is staying at Ajax. He told NOS (quotes via Goal.com):
“I’m happy at Ajax. There’s nothing happening with other clubs.”
Before Overmars’ comments became widely circulated however, the reaction on Twitter to the potential appointment of the Dutchman was not overly enthusiastic to say the least:
Ajax fan tells me that Overmars would be a great fit for us, because at Ajax he sold all their best players and didn’t buy anyone…

If the Overmars Director of Football chat is real, we should go all out & get Vieira, Henry & Bergkamp back as the Management team. #Arsenal

The fact the position will exist is progress. And why not he’s experienced in the role and he’s an arsenal legend. Ticks boxes for me!

OVermars has been a disaster at Ajax which is why they are looking to get rid of him. Why are we taking a Wenger puppet who is Ajax trash?

Step in the right direction getting a DoF but Overmars does seem stingy/lacking decisiveness in the market

Really happy that Overmars could become a DOF next season. Much needed release of responsibility for Wenger so he can finally focus on team.
