Inter Milan will attempt to challenge Manchester United to sign Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil on a free transfer next summer, Calciomercato.com reports.

A big problem for the Serie A club will be the German international’s wage demands. The 28 year old will not accept a pay cut, and it means the Inter’s owners the Suning Group will need to free up funds in the January transfer window in order to meet Ozil’s salary expectations.

The German is reportedly on roughly £150,000 a week currently but there has been reports that the Gunners have offered a sizeable wage rise to as much as £280,000.

Manager Arsene Wenger says that reports from Germany about contract talks stalling are false, but negotiations have slowed down since the start of the season. Ozil’s current deal expires at the end of the campaign, and he could opt to leave on a free transfer with the likes of United, Inter and others all watching his contract talks with some interest.
