The Ligue One club are looking at replacements for holding midfielder Blaise Matuidi who has just a year left on his contract with the French side. At 25, Carvalho is five years younger than Matuidi and plays a similar role for both his club and the Portuguese national team.
The Portuguese media have consistently associated Carvalho with a move to the Premier League with Arsenal, Tottenham and other clubs having been tipped as potential destinations for the midfielder.
As recently as last week, Portuguese newspaper Record reported that Sporting were looking to cash in on the player to finance their summer transfer spending plans. A £30m asking price is believed to have been set with Arsenal said to be among those considering an offer due to the player having a much lower valuation than in previous transfer windows.
