Arsenal could be considering selling centre half Shkodran Mustafi in order to fund a move for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, according to the Mirror journalist John Cross.

The fact that at his press conference today, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger would not rule out the sale of Mustafi, suggests that the German international could be allowed to leave before the end of the transfer window.

The Mirror are reporting that Inter Milan are serious about signing the 25 year old, and are lining up a loan bid with the option to buy for £20m at the end of the season. Although unlikely to accept such terms, an improved offer may tempt Wenger as he looks to free up funds to sign the likes of van Dijk this summer.

The club have failed to offload Mathieu Debuchy, Kieran Gibbs, as well as Lucas Perez, and the club’s lack of transfer activity is mainly down to the fact that they can’t reduce their wage bill by selling these fringe players
