The club are looking to replace Portuguese playmaker who has failed to live up to expectations since his £34m move from last summer, and they see the Welsh international as a good alternative.

Ramsey has two years remaining on his current deal at the , and in recent weeks the Daily Telegraph have reported that are keen to tie him down to a longer term contract.

Arsenal fear the same situation next year with the Welshman as they have with Mesut Ozil, and Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer, and are believed to be determined to not allow the 26 year old enter into the last 12 months of his deal with the club.

The midfielder struggled with hamstring and calf problems last season, and was limited to 32 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and contributing five assists.
