Inter Milan will rival Arsenal for Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to the Corriere Dello Sport (via fcinter1908.it).

The German international is reportedly being lined up to replace Portuguese midfielder Joao Mario who could be sold after a single season at the Giuseppe Meazza. Mario signed for Inter in a £34million deal last summer but has struggled to meet expectations. He scored three goals and provided eight assists in 33 matches, but found himself on the bench in the last few weeks of last season.

Goretzka has impressed for Germany at the Confederations Cups, playing in the same attacking midfield role as Mario. The Portuguese international would however need to depart the Italian club first before a move for Goretzka is made.

The 22 year old has one year left on his contract at Schalke, but the Bundesliga side are reluctant to let him leave despite the threat of the player leaving on a free transfer next year. Arsenal have been tipped to make a bid for the playmaker with the player himself keeping quiet on his future after being asked by Sky Sports recently.
