Schalke are making one last attempt to secure Arsenal target Leon Goretzka on a longer term deal, according to Bild.

The 22 year old, who was one of the stars for Germany at the Confederations Cup, has just one year left on his contract at the Veltins-Arena. The midfielder is currently on vacation after his efforts for the national side, but he has reportedly already spoken to Schalke’s new head coach Domenico Tedesco.

Bild reports that Tedesco has included Goretzka in his plans for the new season despite the player’s contract situation. Schalke may look to sell the attacking midfield player rather than allow him to leave for nothing next summer. Reports in recent days have suggested Bayern Munich have already come to an agreement with the German but it seems Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel has other plans.

The plan seems to be to offer Goretzka a new deal with a “staggered” release clause which suggests the buyout amount will reduce throughout the length of the new contract.

When asked by Sky Sports during the Confederations Cup about a move to Arsenal, the German remain coy about his future.
