Former Gunner Charlie Nicholas believes Arsenal should sign a commanding centre-back like Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane this summer.
The 24-year-old Frenchman made the breakthrough and established himself at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho and has been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United in the past due to his commanding displays at the back for the La Liga club.
Arsenal still look frail at the back and it’s an issue that many will feel need addressing this summer having finished fifth in the Premier League and failing to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Arsene Wenger has already added to his defensive line by signing Sead Kolasinac on a free transfer from Schalke, but Nicholas believes his former club need to sign a strong centre-back to fix their ongoing problem:
‘He needs another big-name centre-back, someone like Raphael Varane. He has spent big money so I’m not critical that he isn’t prepared to do that.’
Wenger brought in Shkodran Mustafi from Valencia for big money and also Rob Holding from Bolton for £2million last summer, but the Gunners still look short of options, and many of the Emirates faithful will agree that another centre-back signing this summer, someone like a Varane, would certainly improve their back-line.
