Arsenal are set to compete with Chelsea for the signature of Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

Arsene Wenger switched to a back three on Monday night for Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Middlesbrough, and the Frenchman is now said to be considering a permanent switch to the new system.

Van Dijk, 25, is understood to have attracted the attentions of several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City.

The Daily Mirror now claims Arsenal will enter the race for the Dutchman, with Wenger already making enquiries about the former Celtic centre-back as the Frenchman plans a rebuild this summer.

It’s thought that Wenger wants to solidify his back-line ahead of next season, despite signing Shkodran Mustafi last summer, and believes Van Dijk could be the missing piece in his defensive puzzle.

However, Arsenal may have to shell out up to £50million to sign the Dutchman as interest continues to increase.
