The Mirror are reporting that RB Leipzig are poised to sign Dayot Upamecano from Red Bull Salzburg in the next ten days. Arsenal and Barcelona have been linked to the French Under-19 star in recent months.
In some respects, it is an unsurprising move. Red Bull effectively owns both clubs and Leipzig’s current sporting director Ralf Rangnick signed Upamecano from Valenciennes in 2015 when he was in a similar role at Salzburg.
The 18-year-old has broken through into Red Bull Salzburg’s first-team this season after spending part of last season on loan at the club’s feeder side Liefering in the Austrian Second Division. So far this campaign, Upamecano has made 21 appearances in all competitions.
It has been suggested by Spanish newspaper Sport recently that the player wanted to join Barcelona in preference to the Gunners, but no bid from Barca seems likely, especially in the January transfer window, leaving Leipzig front runners for the player’s signature.
