The 25-year-old’s displays for the Saints this season have been noticed by many pundits and fans alike, and it seemed that both Manchester City and Chelsea would be the likeliest candidates to sign the centre-back in this transfer window.
Whether the Gunners’ interest is as concrete as other English sides looks debatable for a few reasons. Yesterday Laurent Koscielny was given a new three and half year deal which suggests that the club see the Frenchman as having a big part to play over the next few seasons.
Secondly, Arsenal signed a high-profile centre-back for £35 million in Shkodran Mustafi last summer and are surely not looking to make another, unless a player departs.
Finally, Arsene Wenger has stated that he is not looking to sign players this month which would suggest any bid, if it were likely, would happen in the summer at the earliest.
