Arsenal had a representative present to watch Sporting Lisbon lose 2-1 in the Portuguese Cup to Vitoria Setubal yesterday, according to Abola.

The Portuguese newspaper report that Manchester United also had a scout in the stands for the match, and they are believed to have been watching promising midfielder Gelson Martins.

The same paper reported that Arsenal and United were watching the same player back in late November when scouts were present for the game between Boavista and Martins’ Sporting.

One obvious fact to note is that Arsenal winger Joel Campbell is also on loan at Sporting, and it could be that Arsene Wenger has sent a representative to keep an eye on the 24-year-old’s progress.

Campbell joined the Portuguese club on loan in August, and has so far scored three goals and provided three assists in 10 matches. Martins meanwhile came on at half time yesterday, and so far this season has provided nine assists and scored two goals in 15 games.
