Absence from match day squad prompts talk of Arsenal switch

|

Benfica playmaker Goncalo Guedes’s absence yesterday for the Portuguese side’s 4-0 win over Tondela has prompted further speculation about the 20-year-old’s future at the Estadio da Luz.

The Record newspaper reported on Friday that Guedes’s agent Jorge Mendes and president Luis Filipe Vieira were in London to discuss a £26 million sale of the attacking midfielder. Now O Jogo are also saying that the player’s failure absence from the match day squad for last night’s game means he is likely to leave during the January transfer window.

Similarly to the Record though, O Jogo are not entirely sure which club Benfica are in talks with. They say discussions could be about a move to England, France or Spain, and they suggest that as Arsenal and PSG have been tracking the player, they are the most likely candidates.

Guedes’s record for Benfica this season has been very good. Playing ostensibly in a number 10 role, he has scored seven goals and provided seven assists in 28 appearances.
