Former Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has revealed he tried to sign Alexis Sanchez when he arrived at the club back in 2013; a year before he joined Arsenal from Barcelona.

Pellegrini was a keen admirer of his fellow countryman, and the Chilean international was believed to be close to a move after struggling to establish himself at the Camp Nou. Although he played 46 times in all competitions during the 2012/13 season, he started 28 of them and only scored 11 goals.

Speaking to Chilean radio station ADN, Pellegrini said they City were unable to finalize a move for Sanchez due to financial restrictions placed on the club by UEFA through their Financial Fair Play regulations:

He’s one of the best in the world and proves it every day. He was always an important player for City. We were not able to take [the player] before he signed for Arsenal, it was because the club was punished for fair financial play as we did not have the quota.’

Sanchez signed for the Gunners in 2014 for £32million, and has gone on to score 56 goals in 115 appearances, as well as providing 34 assists in all competitions.

His current contract runs until 2018 but speculation about the Chilean’s future at the club has increased after contract talks were opened with the Gunners over a new deal. Pellegrini now manages Chinese Super League side Hebei China Fortune, and said he would not mind Sanchez joining him at the club.
