Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed that Arsenal have tried to sign him in the past but he turned down a move to the North London club.

The Sweden international is adjudged as one of the finest centre forwards of the modern era and joined the Old Trafford side on a free transfer over the summer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

Ibrahimovic has made an immediate impression for United in the Premier League, scoring in his first couple of games for the English side.

The Scandinavian has been linked intermittently to Arsenal over the years but no transfer ever materialised.

Ibrahimovic has confirmed that he has had the chance to move to the Emirates Stadium in the past but opted to spurn the chance to join Arsene Wenger’s men.

“I was close to moving to the Premier League twice – once with Arsenal and then Manchester City,” he told Sky Sports.

“But it never happened and I don’t need to play in the Premier League.

“Mourinho is the mastermind, the masterbrain. He knows what he needs to do to win. I learned a lot from him at Inter.

“Who wouldn’t want to have Mourinho as manager?”

Arsenal were in the market for a new centre forward this summer to offer competition for places with Olivier Giroud and ended up signing Lucas Perez from Deportivo La Coruna.
