Arsenal have missed out on resigning former defender Thomas Vermaelen, with images emerging of the Belgium star landing in Italy to sign for Roma.
Talk in the press had suggested that the Gunners were ready to move for their former charge, who has become surplus to requirements at the Camp Nou.
Arsenal face something of a defensive crisis with the new season only a week away, as Per Mertesacker has been sidelined for a number of months.
With Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel Paulista also struggling to be ready to face Liverpool next weekend, Arsene Wenger is said to be in the market for a new centre-half.

Vermaelen left the Emirates Stadium to move to the Catalan giants two summers ago but has found first-team football with Luis Enrique’s side hard to come by.
The Belgian will link up with Arsenal loanee and former team-mate Wojciech Szczesny at the Stadio Olimpico – if he passes a medical with the Giallorossi.
