Damian MartinezWolves are on the verge of signing Arsenal’s Damian Martinez on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old featured for Arsene Wenger’s side during pre-season but stands little chance of obtaining regular first-team football at the Emirates this season with both Petr Cech and David Opsina ahead of him.

The highly-rated Argentine made just six appearances for the Gunners last season before joining Rotherham on loan in March, where he made eight appearances.

A loan move away this summer would be his best bet of playing regularly and honing his ability this season.

However, should Martinez depart for Wolves then Arsenal will only be left with two senior goalkeepers in Cech and Ospina, with Wojciech Szczesny sealing a loan move to Roma earlier in the transfer window.

Former Gunners Benik Afobe signed for Wolves in January on a permanent basis and has revealed the Martinez deal is close to being agreed. He tweeted:

‘[Manager, Kenny] Jackett has confirmed that Wolves have a verbal agreement with @Arsenal for the loan of Emiliano Martinez. Hopefully completed today.’

Martinez certainly has the ability and potential to succeed but he needs to gain as much first-team experience as he can to fulfil it – something he will struggle to do if he remains at Arsenal.
