HowedesBenedikt Howedes has revealed he turned down a move to Arsenal to remain at Schalke, leaving the Gunners to look elsewhere for defensive reinforcements.

The 27-year-old German has once again been linked with a move to Arsenal this summer and was tipped to leave Schalke after the Bundesliga side failed to qualify for the Champions League next season.

But Howedes has dismissed any speculation surrounding his future by pledging his loyalty to Schalke:

Quoted on talkSPORT.com, the German international said:

‘Milan and Arsenal have really been keen on my services, this is what I am able to confirm. Still I have not opted against them, I have decided in favour of FC Schalke 04.

‘My job is not done here yet. And, especially after last season, I told myself I do not want to leave this way.

‘I am a key player of this club.’

Earlier this month, Mesut Ozil recommended both Howedes and Dortmund’s Mats Hummels to make a move to the Premier League. Hummels could still switch Germany for England, but Howedes won’t be, not this summer anyway.

Subsequently, Arsene Wenger will have to turn his attentions elsewhere if he wants to bring in a new centre-back this summer.

Howedes would have made a good addition to the squad, but there are other options out there to consider.
