Will this Spaniard be at Arsenal next season?

|

Nacho MonrealAthletic Bilbao revealed they are interested in a number of players, including Nacho Monreal.

The Spanish left-back, who joined Arsenal from Malaga in 2013, has been in and out of the side since his arrival but is emerging as a regular this season for the Gunners, despite being tipped with a move back to Spain before the January transfer window closed.

And although Monreal has featured in the centre-back role and his natural full-back one (starting 15 of Arsenal’s 23 Premier League games so far), Bilbao are keen to sign the 28-year-old, according to the La Liga’s club president Josu Urruita.

Quoted in Spanish publication AS, as reported by the Daily Express, Urrutia said:

‘There was interest from Athletic in players, although it was focused on Illarramendi.

‘There are not so many players: [Asier] Illarramendi, Raúl García, [Nacho] Monreal, [Cesar] Azpilicueta.

‘We have to be aware, monitoring- whether they continue at their clubs [or not], it’s because they are interesting.’

But after signing Gabriel Paulista, a centre-back who can play anywhere along the back line, from Villarreal, could Monreal be on his way out of the Emirates at the end of the season?

Personally, I think Monreal will remain at the club, despite Bilbao’s interest in the Spaniard. We don’t have many options in the left-back role as it is, with Kieran Gibbs only challenging for the position.

Monreal struggled to settle at Arsenal in the beginning, with many fans cursing Arsene Wenger for bringing him to the Emirates. But truth be told, he has picked his game up this season and looks a more accomplished player now than when he first arrived. He has also shown his versatility this year, playing in the centre of the back four on a number of occasions which would have pleased Wenger, who was, before signing Paulista, was looking for a new centre-back.

Unless Wenger brings in another left-back this summer expect to see Monreal at the club next season.

Arsenal should keep low their turnover of players and that includes Monreal too. He’s picked up his game so should be left to contribute to the development of the club.
