Time to give someone else a go upfront

|

olivier giroudIt was an abysmal result and performance in midweek against Monaco in the Champions League. Not one player decided to turn up and it looked like the selected eleven that Arsene Wenger chose to represent the club against the French side just met. Not one player had even a decent game in my opinion, but one there was one performance from the bunch that was, for me, the worst on the night – Olivier Giroud.

The French forward missed a catalogue of chances, including a rebound he ballooned over from about four yards from goal, on Wednesday night. It was arguably his worst night in an Arsenal shirt since his arrival from Montpellier three-years ago and he himself admitted he was left ‘embarrassed’ and ‘disappointed’ at his display.

So far this season, the 28-year-old has netted 10 goals (eight in the Premier League and the other two in the FA Cup) in 19 total appearances. It makes for good reading, but with the midfield operating behind and on either side of him, he should be getting a better return in goals. However, he has shown again – on Wednesday night – his inconsistency, and this is why many Arsenal fans don’t see him as the striker who can fire the Gunners to European and Premier League glory. And after witnessing his latest performance, I would even question his place in the starting line-up. Surely, Wenger should consider giving someone like Theo Walcott or even Danny Welbeck a go upfront.

Giroud’s confidence is not with him at the moment, he’s said it himself, and perhaps Wenger should have a private chat with him in regards to resting him for a week or two. This may sound like a knee-jerk decision just because of what I saw against Monaco, but taking him out of the firing line could be a wise decision.
