Was Crystal Palace the right move for him?

Yaya SanogoAfter much speculation, Yaya Sanogo has moved to Crystal Palace on loan for the remainder of the season.

The France Under-21 international was being heavily linked with a loan move to Bordeaux, with the club’s president claiming the striker wanted to join the French side. And although Arsene Wenger was keen to send the 21-year-old out on loan, he wanted him to remain in the Premier League, thus turning down Bordeaux’s approach.

Hull City and QPR were also reportedly interested in Sanogo, but Wenger accepted Palace’s offer, hoping the young forward can gain the experience required at Selhurst Park.

On signing Sanogo, Alan Pardew said:

‘He’s a young player with tremendous promise, somebody that I have tracked personally and this club has too so that fitted well.

‘We have given him an opportunity, he needs to play more games and I think he’s ready for that and he proved that at Arsenal. It’s tough to get in their team but he’s closer to the starting action with us.’

Sanogo featured five times for Arsenal this season in all competitions and scored just one goal, this coming in the win against Dortmund in the Champions League.

Signed on a free, Sanogo arrived to the Emirates in summer 2013 but has found first-team opportunities hard to come by since the arrivals of Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez.

But the Frenchman hopes he can get regular football at Palace:

‘When the Arsenal manager spoke with me about Crystal Palace I was very happy because I want to play more games.

‘I think Palace are a good team, I watched the game against Tottenham and it was a great performance from the guys. I hope I can help the club have a successful second half of the season.’

So, was Palace the right move for Sanogo? Or should he have joined one of the other three clubs interested in his services?

Well I think Wenger was right to turn down Bordeaux. Although he would have probably featured for the Ligue 1 club, Sanogo needs to be playing in the Premier League and honing his ability where Wenger sees fit.

But what about Hull City and QPR?

Had he joined Hull, then I don’t think he would have got ahead of the likes of Abel Hernandez and Nikica Jelavic. In addition, their style of play is different to ours and would not benefit him in the long run. This can also be said with QPR. Their style of play also differs to ours and would’ve got ahead Charlie Austin and Eduardo Vargas? I doubt it.

Palace play a good style of football and they are short of attacking options, meaning Sanogo will almost certainly feature for them on regular basis.

Hopefully he gains the experience needed to come back and do better for us next season.

I think it was the right move for him, he should get more opportunities at Palace compared to QPR (Austin, Vargas & Zamora) and Hull (Jelavic, Hernandez & Sagbo), and sending him abroad would be a pointless measure. I don’t believe he’ll ever have what it takes to be an important squad member at Arsenal, but he could be a success for mid to lower table sides in the Premier League, with regular football. Hope he does well for Palace, i’d like to see them stay up.

Awesome move for him he is a very good footballer who only lacks confidence. With a run of games the world will surely see what Yaya Sanogo can really do.
