And despite a strong, defensive display yesterday against Manchester City, which saw the Gunners run out 2-0 winners and take all three points off the current Premier League champions, Winterburn insists signing a new centre-back should be Wenger’s top priority this January:
Quoted on TalkSPORT, the former left-back said:
‘Arsenal will do something this month.
‘They desperately need another centre-half.
‘That will be the area Wenger will look at.’
Wenger has himself conceded recently that it would be ‘too risky’ not to sign a new defender – even more so after hearing Mathieu Debuchy will be out of action until mid-April.
Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, and Calum Chambers are Wenger’s only three options in the centre-back role. Should one of them pick up an injury then we would be in serious trouble – especially if Wenger hasn’t reinforced before the transfer deadline.
We all know what is required and so does Wenger. Question now is, will he deliver and will the potential signing be good enough to actually offer cover for Per and Kos? We have to wait and see.
