Arsene WengerNigel Winterburn claims are in desperate need of signing another centre-back and has backed Arsene Wenger to deliver the goods before the window closes.

Several defenders have been touted with a move to the in recent weeks, with Winston Reid and Paulista the latest two names to hit the headlines once again.

And despite a strong, defensive display yesterday against Manchester City, which saw run out 2-0 winners and take all three points off the current Premier League champions, Winterburn insists signing a new centre-back should be Wenger’s top priority this January:

Quoted on TalkSPORT, the former left-back said:

will do something this month.

‘They desperately need another centre-half.

‘That will be the area Wenger will look at.’

Wenger has himself conceded recently that it would be ‘too risky’ not to sign a new defender – even more so after hearing Mathieu Debuchy will be out of action until mid-April.

Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker, and are Wenger’s only three options in the centre-back role. Should one of them pick up an injury then we would be in serious trouble – especially if Wenger hasn’t reinforced before the deadline.

The Frenchman sold to Barcelona over the summer but has yet to replace the former captain.

We all know what is required and so does Wenger. Question now is, will he deliver and will the potential signing be good enough to actually offer cover for Per and Kos? We have to wait and see.
