William CarvalhoArsene Wenger stated a few days ago that the summer spending will continue and is still looking to recruit new faces before the transfer window shuts.

And according to reports in Portugal, the Frenchman is on the verge of making a £24 million offer for William Carvalho

The Sporting Lisbon midfielder, who has also been linked with both Manchester United and Chelsea, has been on Wenger’s radar this summer, with the Frenchman eager to add a defensive midfielder to his squad.

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo claim, as reported by Metro, Sporting could accept Arsenal’s £24 million bid, despite the 22-year-old having a £37 million release clause in his existing contract.

The Portuguese side look resigned to losing their prized asset and are hopeful that by lowering their asking price they can receive the full payment up-front in order to begin rebuilding their squad.

The Gunners reportedly offered the same amount of £24 million but in installments last month which was rejected, but Sporting now feel they can do business with Arsenal if the cash was paid in full upfront.

Although Carvalho, who still has four years left on his current deal, is young at 22, the Portugal international is highly-rated in his native country and has great potential to become a world beater with the right tutelage and development scheme.

If a deal can’t be done for Sami Khedira, then Arsenal should pursue Carvalho.
