Italian playmaker Andrea Pirlo is leaving the door open to a summer switch to the Premier League – should Arsenal register their interest in him?
The 34-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the current campaign and will be available on a free should Juventus not tie the Italian down to a new deal.
Last month Juventus club director Giuseppe Marotta said that the club are in no rush to get Pirlo to the negotiation table to extend the midfielder’s stay and retain his services.
However, should Juve decide not to offer him a new contract, Pirlo has no plans to hang up his boots just yet.
When asked about his future, Pirlo replied:
‘My future? There is the rest of the season to talk about it. We’ll see.
‘I am optimistic. I want to keep playing because I’m good and enjoy it.
‘I don’t know if it will be at Juventus or another team.’
Spurs are believed to be leading the chase to bring Pirlo to England but will have to fend off interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and United to land him.
Although he is a superb player, one of my current favourites in fact, I cannot for the life of me see Pirlo at the Emirates next season.
To be honest, we already have enough midfielders at our club as it is and I also think Pirlo would struggle to adapt to the fast and competitive pace of the Premier League.
Not taking anything away from the Italian because he is a player with vast experience as well as unbelievable vision, passing range and technical ability. But Serie A football is much slower to that of the Premier League. He is allowed a lot of time on the ball in Italy but in England it’s not like that and for this reason alone I think he should steer clear of our league and look elsewhere if he is to leave Juevntus.
