Mathieu Flamini has re-joined Arsenal on a free, and I for one am happy to see him back to where he describes as ‘home’.
So our midfield has been bolstered but other areas still need to be improved in the next three days or so. I’m pretty the whole of the Arsenal faithful would like to see a striker and a centre-back come in. And instead of forking out shed loads of money to acquire a defence-minded player, former Gunners captain Tony Adams believes Arsene Wenger should look no further than Eric Dier.
Adams reckons Wenger should find the new Gilberto, who left Arsenal in 2008, and sees Dier as the player to fill the gap left by the Brazilian all those years ago:
‘There’s a kid at Sporting Lisbon, Eric Dier, who’s English, he’s 19, maybe he could fill the gap? He certainly wouldn’t cost £30m or £50m.’
Should Wenger take Adam’s advice and have a look at Dier?
Personally, I would rather Wenger just go for Ashley Williams, as the Welshman is a powerful defender who attains Premier League experience.
Perhaps Dier is a very good defender. I’m sure Adam’s wouldn’t recommend him for no reason. But do we really want another youngster coming through our doors or someone a bit more seasoned who can fight for a starting place in the side?

The writer lost his tack somewhere in writing this piece or knows so little about football that he doesn’t realise defensive midfielder and defender are two different positions. Though Adams may not have a good managerial record he is arsenal through and through and he is right in that we need a Gilberto in the middle of the park. What I fear this weekend is that with Ramsey and rosicky in middle of park is we will be lightweight in tackling department those two are good players but aren’t physically imposing. I would love to see Wenger use frimpong or flamini alongside Ramsey with wilshere as cam then bring on rosicky from 56 min or so give us a bit of bite in middle. Still think we win this 2-1 though.
You all are right abt d writer not knowing d diff btw DM and CB defender. Wenger is an economist dat is y he does not want to spend big but i tell u i dnt pray it comes backs 2 hurt d club else he will lost his reputation @ d end. True gooner
