It is being reported that Arsene Wenger is weighing up a £20 million move for Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan. And as a fan of the German international, I would love nothing more than to see this happen.
Apparently the 22-year-old holding midfielder is high on top of Wenger’s wish list this summer following an impressive run to the Champions League final this season.
Gundogan signed for Dortmund in 2011 from Nuremburg on a four-year deal and has been ever present for the former Bundesliga champions, racking up a total of 79 appearances and contributing eight goals and six assists.
However, with Dortmund set to lose their big-name players this summer, notably Mario Gotze to Bayern Munich and Robert Lewandowski seemingly off as well, Gundogan may well consider his options in the upcoming weeks.
He could cost Arsenal around £20 million but it would be money well spent, in my opinion.
He has great technical ability and a superb work-rate for a player still developing his game. In addition, the German midfielder is also well disciplined in his position and gets stuck in – something we have lacked since the departure of Alex Song last summer.
Having not replaced Song, we could really do with a tireless midfielder coming in this summer and I believe Gundogan would be the perfect man for the job.
Hopefully this deal goes through.
