Is he ‘the new Martin Keown’ as former Arsenal captain suggests?

|

Laurent KoscielnyTony Adams has hailed Laurent Koscielny as ‘the new Martin Keown’.

The 27-year-old centre-back produced a string of stellar performances for The Gunners last season, which, unfortunately for us, has attracted the interest of both Barcelona and Bayern Munich this summer.

And Adams believes Arsene Wenger has found an old-school defender in the France international that reminds him of his former defensive partner Keown:

‘Koscielny was brilliant [at the end of last season].

‘He reminds me a lot of Martin Keown. He’s very tenacious. I hate labelling people because Martin Keown was one of the best we’ve ever had.

‘But there are similarities there, the way Koscielny marks and his last-ditch tackles.

‘He’s tenacious in the tackle. [When it came to] that tight, one-to-one defending, there wasn’t a better player that I’ve played with, [than Keown].

‘To put Koscielny in the same category [to Keown] is an enormous compliment I think.’

Koscielny – A.K.A ‘Kos the Boss’ – was undoubtedly a key figure in the side last season, especially in the latter stages of the season, and the hard-tackling defender has developed immensely since his arrival from Lorient in 2010.

I believe Koscielny is our best defender at the moment and after reading Adams’ comments, comparing the Frenchman to Keown, I can see where out former captain is coming from.

It’s a hell of a comparison but one which is not far-fetched in my opinion. Hopefully Kos is with us for years to come and earns legendary status at Arsenal.
