Why Wenger shouldn’t answer this striker’s call

|

Charlie AustinDespite bringing in Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski last summer, it seems Arsene Wenger wants to reinforce his attacking options ahead of next season’s campaign.

The Gunners have been linked with a number of strikers in recent weeks/months, from QPR’s Loic Remy to Atletico Madrid’s Adrian Lopez.

However, a name that may not be on top of many Arsenal fans’ wish list, or even Wenger’s for that matter is Charlie Austin, who is reportedly being monitored by the north London club.

The Burnley striker, who has netted 28 goals in the Championship this season, recently issued a ‘come and get me plea’ to interested Premier League clubs this summer.

The 23-year-old only has one more year left to run on his existing deal but admits he hopes a Premier League outfit come in for him at the end of the season:

‘If it comes this summer, I’ll take it and I’ll leave Burnley with my head held high.

‘When that chance comes, every footballer wants to play in the Premier League.’

However, Austin says he will be happy to remain at Burnley if there is no interest in him:

‘No matter what the rumours are I’ve no intention of going anywhere unless the club say so.’

Austin has played Non-League football in the past for AFC Newsbury, Kintbury Rangers, Hungerford Town and Poole Town before signing for Swindon Town in 2009 after a successful trial. He spent two seasons at Swindon before signing for current club Burnley, where he has hit 54 goals in 85 appearances in all competitions so far.

As impressive as his record is at Burnley, everyone knows the Premier League is a different ball game compared to the Championship.

I think he has what it takes to play in the Premier League, but for Arsenal? I don’t think so.

If Wenger is looking to sign a striker then hopefully he brings in someone who is proven at a top-level and an international. In my opinion, we would be foolish not to consider acquiring Remy from QPR this summer.

Austin is not Arsenal material in my book.
