Why this summer will be no different at Arsenal

|

Arsene WengerA good solid dose of yak’s breath. This is what is needed if Arsenal fans are to wake up and understand that this summer is not going to be any different from any previous one.

With the exception, perhaps, of one of our major ‘qualitee’ players leaving and throwing us all into crisis – though as I write, it seems the Germans have an eye on young Jack Wilshire, so it could well turn out to be exactly the same kind of summer as all the rest.

Stevan Jovetic. Gonzalo Higuain. Wayne Rooney. A £70 million ‘war chest’ to buy ‘world class’ players of ‘top, top qualitee’. That’s right – I said it twice. ‘Qualitee’. There’s a third. Get used to it. Because that’s all you are going to hear all summer long as we sign the usual mix of youth who have ‘amazing potential’ (Yaya Sanogo, anyone?), ‘experienced’ Premier League mediocrity (Ashley Williams, perchance?) and world class goalkeepers (Simon Mignolet, did I hear you say?). Nothing is going to change. No one, of any note, is going to come.

Whilst it may or may not be true that there is a sizeable ‘war chest’ (and what a laughable description that is), the problem is always going to be the same. Arsene Wenger. I don’t buy the stories that he’s had his hands tied all these years because of the stadium deal, or that he’s finally learned that the promise of youth isn’t enough to make you contenders.

The problem is that leopards don’t ever change their spots. And Wenger is certainly not about to change his. For example, Jovetic (so we are told) has a £24.5 million release clause in his contract. Wenger (so we are also told) won’t pay more than £20 or maybe £22 million for a single player. Same old, same old. Summer after summer. The money may be there. But I guarantee you he’s not going to spend it on the kind of players you and I want so dearly to see at The Emirates next season.

    Shame on you for asking when the last time Wenger signed a world class player… I mean if the media does not recognize Cazorla the way he deserves in England… then to hell with you opinions about Wenger.

    @Zgunner;
    u got me all wrong! My point is rather that of AFC bringing the best out of players and turning them to stars! In our glory days of the 90’s -’05, we had good players not necessarily superstars whose team work and style of play was a delight to watch! You just loved football watching Arsenal play it. Would an array of stars bought handsomely, winning a trophy or 2 in say maybe 5 years appeal more? Emphasis should be more on good players than over-priced ‘super stars’! Would want diminishing law effect touch is as Man C is set to face! Big money does not equate even the smallest of trophys! Man C and Marid both ended the season empty handed! Wigan is better of than both as it is!

    I believe your are right the signings we make wil be just like the ones we made in previous years… They will be in the same class as Kos, Podi, TV5, Monrral, SC19, Giroud if we are lucky. But I think your are missing the point why. It’s because of our business model, it makes no sense to sign £30m plus players because we don’t have that kind of money. £70m may sound like a lot but it really is not. When you factor the salary that such a player commands it and the fact that there is no guarantee the player stays healthy or pans out (see Andy Carrol, Torres etc.) and the discontent in the locker room if that player is not producing at the superstar level. For me there is no point buying one super expensive player you have to buy several to ensure success and we can’t afford that. It’s like the guy who makes and average salary wins the lottery and spends the entire the winnings on an expensive house… He is going to loose it because he can’t maintain that lifestyle .

      Brainwashed u just want an excuse to spend money that’s it. Same quality as kos? He was out best player this season!? We can spend 30 mil on a player that isn’t the issue the issue is why spend 30 mil on a player that is worth half of that eg. Clement grenier. Fact is we can’t spend 30 mil on 4 players but we could spend 30 mil on 2. But if we spend that money and then didn’t win anything what would happen then?

    Our club has only been uncompetitive for the last two seasons .As regards the transfer market clubs like monaco are distorting the market(unless you believe the likes of falcao are signing on for the challenge).Anyway wenger or no wenger id rather challenge for trophies in our prudent way than in the nouveau riche classless way of chelsea(congrats on going one better than fulham in europa league)
