Why this man should be Wenger’s top target this summer

|

Marco ReusWhile many Arsenal fans will want to see Arsene Wenger sign a top-notch striker, myself included, I still think our side lacks creativity.

After losing Cesc Fabregas two years ago to Barcelona, Wenger signed Santi Cazorla from Malaga last summer to fill the void.

The 28-year-old Spaniard has had a productive first full season at The Emirates, creating nine goals and netting 12 in 45 appearances in all competitions, and many have suggested he has been the signing of the season. However, and this may sound harsh, but in some games this season (nearer the end of it) Cazorla has fizzled out. Whether this is because he has played out of position in recent weeks or feeling a little jaded I don’t know, but he hasn’t dictated or controlled games like was when he first arrived.

I’m not saying he’s rubbish or anything, in fact, I rate him highly. But when he has a poor game we have no-one who can create like he does. Tomas Rosicky is the only player in our squad (in my opinion) who boasts creativity, but the Czech midfielder rarely plays or when he does, never gets a healthy run in the side.

So while many of you will believe a striker is a necessity this summer, and I too would like to see a top finisher come in, I firmly believe adding a creative midfielder is just as important.

Fabregas has been linked with a move back to Arsenal but I just don’t see this happening.

So who I hear you ask should Arsenal go for?

There are a number of candidates out there, but I would love to see Wenger go for Marco Reus!

The 23-year-old Dortmund playmaker has unbelievable technical ability, great composure on the ball, speed, and is very versatile. More importantly, the German international is a creative genius. He also attains Champions League experience and is a regular in the German national senior side. Reus has all the attributes to succeed at Arsenal and it was reported last month that he idolises Tomas Rosicky and wants to replicate the Czech midfielder’s dynamic style. So potentially, Rosicky remaining at the club could tempt Reus to joining us – this may just be wishful thinking of coure. Hopefully it’s not.

We were linked with him in the past before he joined Dortmund last summer from Borussia Monchengladbach. But it seems Jurgen Klopp’s side may disband this summer with Mario Gotze off to Bayern Munich and Robert Lewandowski unwilling to prolong his stay at Westfalenstadion this summer. This is not to say Reus will pack his bags and head out as well, but he may well reconsider his options if he sees the ‘big names’ depart at the end of the season.

Wenger has been promised £70 million to spend (this is not including potential player sales this summer and incoming revenue from the new Puma kit deal) so to splash the cash on Reus would not be an issue. We could even offer him a better wage package than he is currently receiving at Dortmund (believed to be around £57k-a-week). So a potential move for Reus, who still has four-years left to run on his existing contract at Dortmund, is not an impossible one.

Wenger should make some bold moves this summer, and bringing in a player of Reus’ quality will undoubtedly help us in our quest to secure some silverware next season.

erm his a winger playing on the left side of attack. wenger could of had him for 17m before he went to dortmund but as always that is too much money. and they wont spend 30-35m for him now are they. i would take a left side attack and a CF.

but this is arsenal we might spend big on one player thats cost round 20m but nothing over that.

He just signed for Dortmund last year for 13M, he’s practically a guaranteed starter and Dortmund is his home town club where he started his football. If hee wanted to come to us he would have last year when we were scouting him but he agreed to join Dortmund way before the transfer window even opened up which affrims his desire to want to be there.

Reus is undoubtedly one of the most talented, versatile players in all of football right now. What amazes me the most about Reus is his ability do everything at full speed – dribble, pass or shoot!

Arsenal only converted on 12 set pieces all year, tied for 8th in the league. Reus is incredibly accurate on free kicks and he would likely be able to convert more of the many set pieces we are given (easy goal opportunities).

He already scored 20+ goals in the Bundesliga at the tender age of 22 and is a regular on the German National team, which is no easy feat when you consider that he’s competing against the likes of Podolski, Muller, Ozil, Schurrle, Draxler, Gotze etc.

The shocking thing is that Wenger could have had Reus last year for just a nominal 3-5 million more than he paid for Podolski. I’m not saying Podolski has been a bust by any means, but when you consider age and potential into the equation, the extra cash needed to have acquired Reus’ services is shocking.
