A bold statement which may divide fans further

|

When Robson was asked whether Wenger was unsackable, he said:

‘In my view he’s not. I wrote an article about four or five years ago when I said he was the cause of a lot of problems at Arsenal.

‘He doesn’t have the tactical understanding, his manner on the side of the pitch doesn’t help the team, he’s petulant and therefore his players become petulant, he doesn’t give any information from the sidelines and his teams look under prepared defensively.

‘I wrote that article five years and nothing has changed my mind since. In fact my views on Arsene Wenger are even stronger now than they were then. There are still 50% of the fans which will say what a good job he is doing, and we must trust in Arsene Wenger, but I just don’t see it.’

A controversial comment to many, but he is speaking the truth.

Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho are the odds on favourites to take over should we get rid of Wenger. But Robson claims the club should look at the coaches they currently have at the club.

He added:

‘Arsenal still have good players.

‘If somebody got hold of them and taught them how to defend, had a solid game plan and worked hard on them then I still think Arsenal can still be a very, very good side.

‘For me, there’s no reason why they can’t promote from within. Terry Burton, who is the reserve team boss, is an excellent coach and Steve Bould, who isn’t allowed to do any work at the moment, are both candidates.

‘I would like to see somebody else given a chance at Arsenal, so they can take the club forward to where it should be.

‘I think there’s some wonderful players already at the club and if some better signings come in I think Arsenal could be right back at the top again.’

I can’t really comment on how much input Steve Bould is allowed to contribute in terms of tactics. But I can say if we are to sack Wenger, and that is a big if, why not go big and get a manager who is proven on a global stage.

Call me optimistic, but I have a funny feeling Guardiola would like to join us if he could be persuaded. Our brand of football is similar to that of Barcelona’s. Some of you may be thinking the players won him all those trophies. If you are thinking like that then why aren’t we bagging all the silverware available? On paper our team, when fit, could thrash anyone, but in reality we are underachieving and being schooled by, no offence, the ‘smaller’ clubs in the league.

No doubt this topic will cause a few rows between the Arsenal faithful, if not worsen it. Others want change, some still clutch on the hope that something will alter. My advice to those hoping for a miracle – let go. There is nothing worse than blind and misplaced faith. Change and fear sort of walk hand in hand. So take a leap of faith all of you Wenger supporters out there. Change could bring good fortune.

    Jed –
You dont seem to understand my point.
I am simply saying that events on the pitch have a very, very direct relationship with how much money we have to spend.
I dont like it, but money equals success these days.
I wasnt trying to defend Arsene anyway, Im in no doubt about his flaws. But we dont know the biggest deciding factor in all this, and until we do, we cannot gamble our future away so easily.

GoonerDave, I’ve got to go to the pub now but it’s been good having a proper discussion with you about the issues. I’m sad we didn’t agree but glad we could debate it without getting personal.

Fingers crossed for a good result tomorrow.
