Would the potential signing of this Dutch ace see RVP stay at Arsenal?

It wasn’t too long ago that Robin van Persie publicly announced that he would not be signing a new contract beyond the summer of 2013, citing the lack of ambition of the club as the main reason.

But with the signings of Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Carzola, who is set to complete his move from Malaga sometime this week, Van Persie is rumoured to be impressed with what the club are doing in the market, with reports suggesting he could reconsider his earlier statement and sign an extension at The Emirates.

Having already signed the three abovementioned names, we seem to be in unfamiliar territory now as Arsene Wenger does not appear to be done with his chequebook this summer.

It actually looks like we’re finally getting what we asked for – the gaffer spending some of that money we keep hearing about after significantly reducing the club’s debt.

Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin is strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, while moves for Yann M’Villa, Clint Dempsey and Hugo Lloris are still being weighed up by Wenger as reports suggests.

Another player who has been linked with us recently has been Ajax’s Gregory van der Wiel.

I wrote an article on this young right-back a few weeks ago, suggesting that he would be an amazing signing for the club, someone to give the fringe players a run for their money as well as our Mr. Consistent and first-choice full-back Bacary Sagna.

But could Van der Wiels’s potential arrival really be what pushes Van Persie to sign a new deal?

Possibly. But then again, our recent summer transfers and future potential signings may be based on the fact that Wenger intends to sell Van Persie and use that money on the reported targets.

Whether or not he does to sign a new contract based on our current actions, I wouldn’t care much.

The statement he posted a few weeks back will haunt him for a long time, should he choose to stay, and the fans will not quickly forget about it.

In my opinion, he should have kept quiet and had faith. Most of the Arsenal faithful are already angry with him and making a u-turn, in my opinion, will do nothing to soften the current situation he’s put himself in.

He would be better off leaving the club. Then again, he is entitled to his own opinion and perhaps the statement was released to light a fire up the club’s and Wenger’s backside. The again, I still want him to leave!

There was an interview in Voetbal International, Dutch football magazine, also in English, just after the exit of the Dutch team from Euro 2012; Afellay and vander Wiel were both named as negative influences in the Dutch team; Afellay for being arrogant, ‘I’m playing for Barcelona’, and van der Wiel was more interested in running his business (clothing line) than football. I wondered already during the tournament how van der Wiel had gone from great talent during the world cup to pretty cr@p during euro 2012
Don’t think we need players at Arsenal that are not 100% committed.

RVP, our man. I think no one should blame 4 not signning contract extension because you ve put in your best for Arsenal. I dont expect to retire as an Arsenal player.

I personally apologise on behalf of a player that give AFC CL ticket even wit his “glass leg”. we all called for the club to show ambition nd win trophies yet Wen RVP said the same thing the fans hav bin sayin, we call for his head. The manchester clubs hav lessons to teach us arsenal fans on forgiveness. if he decides to stay, pls welcome him back. Am sure this wont harm the club. Thanks for acceptin my apologies on his behalf.

Don’t be foolish, RVP is not the main driving force behind Arsenal changing their approach in the transfer market. He may have had a slight influence on the matter but that doesn’t change the fact that the way he went about making his ‘announcement’ was entirely inappropriate. If he truly felt that way, he should have stated as much behind closed doors to Arsene and the Arsenal execs rather than just post some sh*te on his website. You don’t think all this talk of a ‘change of heart’ could be a result of the clubs linked with signing him seemingly losing interest or just simply being unwilling to meet (a perfectly reasonable) asking price?

If you ask me he played his hand too early and he deserves to get punished. Let him stay, he better play hard and if we win something he can eat his words. I do agree with a few of the above posters, however, that he should apologize to the fans because he showed an utter lack of respect for the supporters who end up paying his wages.

I wish van persie had been harder on the club s strategy (or lack of it). Stay or leave, it was the best thing he could have one for us. We, as fans,,can ride the good and bad times, wenger can work for us or 25 years. Van persie only has 3 left as a top player. I don’t blame him for wanting to make a decision that gives him best chance of winning something, and no one can blame him for not being tempted by 3 times his salary., in the twilight of his career.
