Robson believes new Gunner will be a hit

|

Former Gunner Stewart Robson reckons Arsenal’s new recruit Olivier Giroud will prove to be a good signing.

The 25-year-old, who claimed he can help bring success back to Arsenal and end the club’s trophy drought, completed his move to The Emirates from French champions Montpellier earlier in the week for a reported £13 million.

And Robson believes the France international will be a big hit at Arsenal.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, Robson said:

‘I think it’s a good signing.

‘I’ve seen Giroud play for France and Montpellier and he’s an all-round striker. He’s not got pace but he’s got enough athleticism to get in behind people. He’s very good in the air and his link-up play is good.’

Although Giroud did extremely well for Montpellier last season, where he helped the French club to the title by netting 21 goals in 36 Ligue 1 appearances, I have my reservations about the striker, and here’s why.

They are definitely not the same type of player, but Marouane Chamakh arrived with much promise back in 2010, had a decent first season and is now rarely seen on the pitch. I just hope Giroud doesn’t follow in the same path as the Moroccan. I don’t think he will to be honest as he looks more of an athlete than Chamakh does, and looks more of a complete striker than the latter.

Still it’s another striker, one that should improve our forward line next season, especially with the acquisition of Lukas Podolski and if Robin van Persie remains loyal.

These comparisons with Chamakh are a bit off. For one thing Giroud scored almost twice as many goals in his “big” season in France than Chamakh.
The one thing I can say is definitely very different about Giroud is that he will not be afraid to shoot, and that is the major thing which has held Chamakh back. If Giroud turns out to be nothing more than Chamakh with better shooting/finishing, then he’ll be a good signing.

Zero comparison with Chamakh both in stats and play. I’ve watched Giroud play many times and he has the same presence as someone like Carroll but thats where the comparison ends, because Giroud has the goalscoring instincts of someone like Linekar or Ian wright. He is always in the 6 yard box looking for rebounds and finishing off moves with tap-ins. He is everything we haven’t had since Wrighty left the club. He will score over 20 goals next season.
