Arsenal have announced a pre-season tour of Nigeria in July next year. The north London club are hoping to have the details wrapped up early next week, but have announced:

‘Arsenal will tour Nigeria ahead of the 2012-13 season and will play against some selected Nigerian clubs.’

Musa Amadu, the NFF acting secretary, had the following to say regarding the decision:

‘This visit, I want to observe, will definitely provide a strong platform for a much better relationship between the English Premier League and the Nigeria Premier League.

‘Incidentally, the NPL is just returning firmly to its feet after protracted crisis and will welcome tips and suggestions on how to re-position powerfully for the upcoming season.’

He continued by suggesting that it may be possible for some Nigerian teams to form a technical partnership with Arsenal in the future:

‘It is also important that I mention that some of our football clubs, particularly those in the Premier League, would welcome some form of technical partnership with Arsenal Football Club.’

It will be interesting to see if there will be any partnerships set-up prior to this pre-season tour and of course following it, as it may allow us to scout a couple of good Nigerian players who would have otherwise been missed.

In all it is a brilliant result for Arsenal FC and the Nigerian Gooners out there who will get to see us their beloved club play in their homeland.

Arsenal has had about the largest number of black players pass through its ranks among English premiership clubs. It is therefore an icing on the cake and indeed very natural to have our darling Arsenal visit the most populous black nation on earth. It is also worthy of note that Arsenal has been and remains the EPL club with the most followership in Nigeria. It is an honor to have Arsenal visit the country of one, nay, two of its former greats, the veteran Kanu ‘Papillo’ Nwankwo and, sadly, the run-away Adebayo. I guess not many people know that Adebayo is a Nigerian who preferred to represent his adopted country, Togo, Nigeria’s close neighbor. It is a great, great honor, and we Nigerian gooners look forward to it.
