Is this Newcastle legend right to rule Arsenal out of the title race already?

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has ruled Arsenal out of the title race before it has even begun.

The former England international recently stated that he can only see Manchester United and Chelsea fighting it out for the Premier League, but also feels that Manchester City will have their say in the race.

Shearer stated:

‘There are still around six weeks to go before the transfer window closes and City’s spending power could still change the picture. As it stands now I don’t think City can win the league, but ask me again in six weeks’ time and it could be totally different with the players they can afford to bring in. It looks like City will lose Carlos Tevez, but they will have plans to take care of it.’

Regarding Arsenal, the BBC pundit claimed:

‘It is difficult to assess Arsenal at the moment as I am sure they will bring in players. But we don’t know whether Cesc Fabregas or Samir Nasri are going to be there so it is very difficult. If you ask me now ‘can they win the league?’ I would have to say ‘no’. I’m sure they will have a say because of what Arsene Wenger has achieved. But there is huge pressure on them as they have gone so long without a trophy.’

It looks like Alan Shearer is just sitting on the fence in my opinion. I think the world know that Man United and Chelsea will definitely be challenging for the Premier League title, as they have done for the past few years, so in that sense, he is right. However, to rule out Arsenal already is a big mistake. I believe we can win the Premier League, but it all depends on us having a decent run of form and if we can add a little more quality to our squad in the upcoming weeks.

Shearer’s predictions aren’t exactly reliable, so let’s get the season started and see what happens in 6-7 months time, only then will we know if we are contesting for the title. But to rule out the Gunners before a ball has even been kicked is a bit unfair – we may surprise you this season Alan.

Yes, He is absolutely alright. Arsenal is not going to win anything under wenger and with this approach.

  • Everyone is entitled to their opinion, including Shearer. Sincerely speaking, it takes a magician to forecast what will happen in the future. Unfortunately, Shearer isn’t! Arsenal came very close to winning the league last season, and only fell short due to, especially, defensive frailties, goal droughts. As it stands, Wenger has brought in Gervinho, and from what we have seen so far, it looks like he will help relieve Van Persie of the goalscoring burden. Wenger has also promised to sign a defender, as well as to keep Nasri even if he doesn’t sign a new contract. Apart from United, non of last season’s contenders has really strengthened, so Shearer is singing the usual song, without balanced analysis. Arsenal, with a few additions, can surely win the league!

Liverpool weren’t title contenders last season, it would be unfair to count them out as they’ve strengthened their squad. They’ll finish second to Chelsea this season

It sound ridiculous to hear such from Alan stature…buy player means winning league in the analysis of BBC pundits like Alan…Since we have not buy overrated player like what Liverpool,Man utd,Man.city did. With all player Real Madrid bought last season did they win league?Being player doesn’t qualify you as a pundits

When did Alan start to look into clubs crystal ball? To those gooners who believed Alan even when the season have not began,i call them men of little fate.they cannot have faith in wenger’s philosophy, just because he refuse to buy one player 30million pounds, yes nasri and fabrigas should go they will all be put to shame with arsenaal performance at the end of the season.

Our team isnt good enough to win the league: how can a team who only scores 67 points be close to winning the league. We are not talking about 30 million pound signings, Parker at about 10mil, samba at 12mil or cahil at 16. these are not overinflated prices, especially when u consider they hav prem experience. Lets sell Cesc and Nasri and bring in quality and winning mentality!

      • mr creosote says:

Lewis : None of the players you mentioned have won anything of note (Parker may have won the league with Chelsea but he will have watched from the bench) so how can you justify describing them as having ‘quality and winning mentality’. The players you suggest selling are far superior to the players you want to bring in.

Given the relative scarcity of actual changes in the top 4 clubs, it might possibly look a lot like last year’s campaign, at least at the start. Arsenal added firepower in Gervinho, but other than that, there’s only rumours. ManU got replacements for Van Der Sar (de Gea), O’Shea/Brown (Jones) and one for the future, for Giggs (Young), so theoretically they’re just where they were last year. Chelsea are still to make any substantial changes, as are ManCs, who only got two defenders who’ll probably struggle to get into the starting XI. Outside of the top 4, Tottenham are still to sign anyone interesting, and Liverpool spent a fortune on English talent that problably suits their current ambitions, but would hardly secure a medal. Given all that, I frankly can’t say why Shearer should think Arsenal won’t be better off. It’s actually quite hard to prove any of the clubs improved enough to make them easy contenders. As it stands now, the whole top 4, or even top 6, could well fight it out between themselves on a more or less even keel.

I would like to remind everyone about the nonsense that Shearer babbles on MOTD every weekend. His only managerial experience is from getting Newcastle relegated. Who gives a monkeys chuff what he thinks. If his opinion was worth anything he’d be a premiership manager and not a dreary BBC pundit.
