Arsenal ponder shock move for Wigan midfielder

Arsenal are considering a shock move for Wigan midfielder James McCarthy, according to the Daily Mail.

It is understood that Arsene Wenger had made an enquiry about the 20-year-old earlier this summer, but was clearly told that the youngster was not for sale.

The Republic of Ireland international, who signed for Wigan in 2009 from Scottish side Hamilton, has been in impressive form for the Latics and has handled the Premier League remarkably well for someone so young.

With the potential departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri looming over the Emirates, it is believed that Wenger is considering a bid for the young midfielder this summer.

Liverpool are also thought to be interested in McCarthy, but Roberto Martinez is keen to keep hold of the midfielder.

Earlier this summer, the Wigan boss stated:

‘The players are under contract.’

‘We’ve got a lot of good players and it is understandable people are looking at them.’

‘We don’t know what is going to be around the corner so we are going to enjoy having these players but as a football club you have to be prepared.’

McCarthy certainly has potential.

The midfielder possesses excellent ball control, has a good eye for a pass as well as pace, but would he cement a first-team place at Arsenal? I don’t think so. Besides, his £20 million valuation by Martinez is just ludicrous.
