When we were kings

|

Gilberto

After struggling to settle in London, displace Edu and get Atlético Mineiro to pay up at least one season of owed salary, it all suddenly clicked for Gilberto. You never really noticed he was there but you bloody missed him when he wasn’t. Currently without a club, so expect to see him training at London Colney in the summer!!

Bobby Pires

Signed in 2000 for an absolute steal of £6m, Pires is still revered as one of the best players ever to play for the Gooners. The chip over Peter Schmeichel was worth the transfer fee alone. Left the club under a cloud after being the unfortunate outcast from Jen’s sending off in the Champions League final. Currently earning his keep at Villa. Unfortunately didn’t get a run out at the Emirates recently.

Dennis Bergkamp

In my humble opinion the greatest Gooner ever and the only good thing Bruce Rioch ever did for the club!! The non-flying Dutchman did things with a football most players couldn’t even dream of doing. Interesting fact, he has a first in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bath, studying in the close seasons whilst at Arsenal. Currently he has a trainee role at Ajax which will help him establish himself in a future coaching capacity, hopefully at Arsenal.

Thierry Henry

The man with Va Va Voom, everyone knows Henry’s story. Scored 39 goals in all competitions, PFA Players’ Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Association. Footballer of the Year (for the 2nd year running) but still only managed runners up in the FIFA World Player of the Year award. Thierry is currently playing for the New York Red Bulls in the MLC (Major League Circus). My wife also adds that before the Emirates Cup the face fuzz has to go!!!!!

Notable extras: Edu, Cygan, Wiltord, Reyes, Parlour, Kanu, Keown, Clichy

Sylvain Wiltord

Used to be Arsenal’s record signing. My father in law (god rest his soul) used to absolutely berate him and then he’d score. Reverse psychology always works a treat. Since leaving Arsenal, has roamed the French league and is currently classed as a free agent.

Jeremie Aliadiere

The next great Star of French Football. Never fulfilled his billing and was never as good as Championship Manager would have you believe. Ali is currently without a club, training at London Colney.

What a great team this was. Back then we had a great golkeeper, defenders, midfielders and strikers. In general our team was great, even the players who were on the bench. What a team and I personally think we will never see a team like that again.

    @Boo,
Never despair. Arsenal will, one day soon, surpass even the Invincibles.
Until then there will be many upsets as well as triumphs.
Players will come and go and changes made in team strategy and tactics.
The Manager will be inundated with advice from all quarters on who to sign and how to play.
As a fan since the middle 30’s I can report that things haven’t really changed in all that time.
Supporting Arsenal is not, and never has been, for the fainthearted and there will always be times when the loyalty of fans is sorely tested. The past season has been a prime example of that.
The answer is simply to keep the faith and things will come right. With Arsenal, they usually do.

Bruce Rioch steadied the ship for us after George Graham left, he finished 5th after 2 years of us in the lower half of the table…saying signing Bergkamp is the ONLY good thing he did for us, i wouldn’t agree with… “the BEST thing he did for Arsenal” that statement i would agree with. Have a nice day, thanks for the read.
