Arsenal re-linked with summer swoop for Everton defender

|

It has been reported that Arsenal have rekindled their interest in Everton’s Phil Jagielka, according to the Daily Mail.

Arsene Wenger is a keen admirer of the 28-year-old England international and attempted to sign the centre-back last summer but evidently failed with his approach. However, the Frenchman is thought to be plotting another swoop to land the the Englishman after the Gunners contacted the Merseyside club over the defenders availability. An Everton source told Sportsmail:

‘We have had major interest in Jagielka ahead of the next transfer window. But it will take a huge offer for the club to let him leave.’

Wenger has had countless bids turned down by the Toffees – the biggest being a reported £15 million one last summer. Yet despite the constant rejection, Arsenal will once again look to test David Moyes’ resolve over Jagielka when the season concludes. However, Wenger will know that a more substantial offer will be required if he wishes to prise Phil Jagielka away from Goodison Park this summer, especially after the defender signed a new four-year deal back in March.

If Arsenal were unsuccessful with a £15 million summer offer last season, then my guess is that a bid within the region of £20-25 million will be needed to acquire Phil Jagielka. Whether this is value for money is up for Wenger to decide. Personally, I think it would be a waste of cash. Don’t get me wrong, Jagielka is a good defender and one that has Premier league experience, but spending over £20 million to attain him would be a joke in my book.

In my opinion, Arsenal should be targeting more established centre-backs, and preferably, ones that have Champions League experience under their belt in order to help the club move forward and stabilise their back back-line for next season’s domestic and European campaigns.

He is a good defender and would make a great addition to the Arsenal team. The only thing that concerns me is his age as by Arsene Wengers philsophy he only has two years left in him and then he turns 30, and we know what Wenger does when players turn 30. Also his price range is too high and I think Wenger will not spend between 20-25 million on him. Then again thinking about I don’t think Wenger will spend that money on any player.
