‘In my days there were players who would go in and say to the manager ‘what’s happening here, that’s not right. I don’t see many who would do that today because he has shaped their careers and they don’t feel they can question his judgement.’
The answer to this lies in the new assistant that Wenger will sign after Pat Rice retires this summer. Ian Wright feels the signing should be someone who is capable of telling Wenger that he is doing wrong and not be a ‘yes man.’
The former Gunner also took a dig at Arsenal’s financial stability:
‘Arsenal fans want world class players and not a healthy bank balance. I am talking about the die hard Arsenal fans-the home and away ones and not those who jump on the defensive as soon as questions are raised.’
Wright wrote in a scathing attack on Arsenal’s priority for profit rather than trophies. He also questioned Arsenal’s philosophy while big clubs like Barca, Real and Man United were operating successfully in spite of huge debts.

All the other top teams will strengthen themselves in the summer and Wenger cannot risk being left behind. As Wright says, he doesn’t need to spend billions, but has to spend a few millions on players with the required qualities to guide the team to be successful.
Arsenal missed a glorious chance to succeed this season when other teams were not at their best. There will not be another season like this, so Wenger has to make changes to fight for the trophies and win them.
Wright is right in his assessment of what is needed to make this team successful, but is a little harsh on Arsenal’s financial status. Arsenal would not be in this position if Wenger had spent a lot on players after moving to the Emirates in 2006. But the time has come for Wenger to spend on players and deliver trophies.
It is also time for Cesc Fabregas to depart Arsenal as it seems a move to Barcelona is still playing on his mind. Get that money, and whatever Kroenke provides this summer, to go out and buy the finished articles that Wright is talking about, while the club’s financial harmony is kept intact.
