So, as predicted, Arsenal got hammered by Bayern Munich 5-1 at the Allianz Arena, leaving the Gunners with a slither (if you are overly optimistic) if not, no hope of progressing any further in the Champions League this season.

Arsene Wenger has come under severe criticism as a result, and rightly so. What I saw last night was not only a lack of tactical nous from the Frenchman, but I also saw a bunch of players who don’t deserve to wear the badge. Simply put, it was shambolic, a ‘nightmare’ as Wenger descried, and I feel for those who spent a shed load of money to go watch that disaster.

Firstly, I’m going to start off with Wenger’s team selection. I thought Wenger was going to put Petr Cech in between the sticks, but, to his credit, David Ospina was one of the better players out there last night for Arsenal. Shame he conceded five, because he didn’t deserve too.

The defence. Hector Bellerin, Shkodran Mustafi, Laurent Koscielny and Kieran Gibbs. On paper, it looked good, but my word were they all over the place, especially after Koscielny left the field at the start of the second-half due to a knock. Gabriel came on and we capitulated big time at the back. I don’t believe he is good enough to play in games like these and his lack of concentration and positioned was punished. Fans and even Wenger himself said that Koscielny’s ejection from the game hurt us. Yes, it did, but it cannot be used as an excuse. The score may have been a little more respectable, but I’m sorry Wenger you had last summer and this January to bolster our defence and you chose to rely on Per Mertesacker’s fitness instead.

Midfield. Why put Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out on the wing after impressing in the centre-midfield role in the past few weeks? Why? He should have remained in the centre and put Danny Welbeck out wide. Alex Iwobi. I’m sorry mate but you are not ready for the big games. His inexperience showed and looked frightened. Not his fault, Wenger needs to know this. Put a more experienced player in his place.

I think I heard/read that Mesut Ozil only touched the ball like 20-27 times last night. Now I’m a big fan of the German, but if he isn’t interested then he needs to leave the club or be left out the starting line-up to get his head back in the game. To be fair to him though, those behind him did not feed him, but it was a poor performance once again in a big game. Not good.

Alexis Sanchez looked up for the game but he cut a very lonely and frustrated figure upfront. Scored another goal but he ran around like a headless chicken and, like many, were poor. He got very little service to be fair, but if he is not happy at the club then he should go.

Another season in the Champions League we have gone out in the Last 16 Round and what a way to do so – embarrassing. Not good enough, and the manager and the players need to seriously, and I mean seriously need to question their motives at the club.
