Arsenal are monitoring the progress of Barnsley defender James Bree, but Manchester City believed to be leading the chase for the 19-year-old’s signature, reports the Daily Mirror.

Tottenham, West Ham, Manchester United and Southampton are also believed to be keen on the right-back, with Championship side Aston Villa reportedly ready to make a £4 million move having watched the youngster play in the FA Cup at Blackpool last weekend.

Arsenal could be in the market for a right-back after Arsene Wenger openly claimed that he would allow Carl Jenkinson and Mathieu Debuchy both leave this month or at the end of the season.

However, it’s believed City are frontrunners for Bree as they see clear similarities with John Stones.

Bree has been a regular for Barnsley this season, making 19 appearances in all competitions so far, and only has six months left to run on his existing deal at Oakwell.

It may prove difficult for Barnsley to keep hold of their promising full-back, especially if the player feels he is ready to test himself at Premier League level
