Arsene Wenger has expressed his frustration about the lack of progress that is being made in midfielder Santi Cazorla’s recovery from ankle surgery.

The 32-year-old has not played since the league match against Swansea City in mid October and he underwent an operation in early December to fix the damage in order for a quicker return to full fitness.

January was expected to be the month that the Spaniard would be available again for the first team but it seems as though Arsenal fans will have to wait a lot longer.

Wenger told Arsenal.com that the midfielder’s recovery is not going as well as he would like:

“At the moment, he is far [from returning]. It’s not going as quickly as I imagined it, so certainly in January he will not come back.”

Speculation over Cazorla’s future at the club has grown with his contract expiring at the end of the season with no new deal being agreed. He is now free to talk to other clubs about signing before his current contract runs down at the end of June.
