Per Mertesacker has yet to agree a one-year extension on his Arsenal contract, according to The Evening Standard.

Recent reports have already claimed that the 32-year-old has penned a new deal at the Emirates, but it’s believed nothing has been agreed yet.

The German centre-back’s deal expires in the summer and has not featured for the Gunners since April after undergoing knee surgery. As a result, Arsene Wenger opted to sign Shkodran Mustafi last summer to bolster his defensive options and he has proven quite an acquisition so far this season.

Mertesacker is thought to be keen to extend his stay and the club are willing to allow him to remain on. However, the German must prove his fitness after such a lengthy absence.

The former Germany international has been linked with a loan move away from the club to regain his match fitness and sharpness and although Wenger has recently dismissed these claims, it’s an option that hasn’t been completely ruled out.
