Spanish journalist Manolete has suggested the delay in Barcelona manager Luis Enrique contract negotiations has prompted speculation in the country that the Spaniard could depart for England to to replace Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

Writing in his column in the Spanish daily AS, the journalist was reacting to news that Barcelona have reportedly made first contact with Everton manager Ronald Koeman about taking over at the Camp Nou.

Koeman’s links to Barcelona, Ajax, Johan Cruyff and Louis van Gaal make him a likely candidate to succeed Enrique if he does leave the Catalan club. Manolete notes that the Enrique is well respected in England, and would be a successor that manager Wenger would approve of.

Wenger’s contract with the Gunners expires at the end of the season, and no extension has been discussed, which has led to speculation over the Frenchman’s successor with Juventus manager Max Allegri and Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe also names linked with the post.
