Why he should be Arsenal’s first January signing

|

The January transfer window is just over a fortnight away, and while Arsenal continue to be linked with several players, in all different positions, it remains to be seen whether or not Arsene Wenger will get out his cheque book and strengthen his squad. Having watched Arsenal’s latest outing, the Frenchman should seriously consider it.

We saw Arsenal lose their second Premier League game this season on Tuesday to Everton and the fans were not happy with the performances of a few players. The notable ones were Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. It’s fair to say all three was abysmal on the night and didn’t do enough in the game to change it at any point, leaving some fans questioning whether Wenger needs to bring in, possibly, another forward in January – one that can operate on the flanks. Although Walcott started the season off well, two goals in his last 10 appearances is simply not good enough – but as long as he’s got his coffee machine it’s all good I guess. Chamberlain has started four Premier League games in a row now and has been 50/50 with his performances – his latest wasn’t exactly one we or he will want to remember, while Ozil still keeps his label of not turning up in big games.

So what should Wenger do? Well, Julian Draxler’s name has been popping up over the past month, with the German continuously being linked with a move to Arsenal as he is ready to depart Wolfsburg in January. If you don’t know already, Wolfsburg are putting him up for sale due to his lack of professionalism and bad behaviour, and the Bundesliga club will accept offers of £30 million for the German international. PSG are supposedly eyeing up a move for the Draxler, but should Arsenal be as well? In one word. Yes.

Many will agree that Arsenal haven’t got enough quality on the flanks. We’ve got quantity, but not quality, and perhaps a move for Draxler would sort this problem out. Arsenal simply cannot rely on the likes of Walcott, Chamberlain and Alex Iwobi if they are to make a serious push for the title. The trio’s combined goals tally so far this season adds up to 10 – Alexis Sanchez has 12. We need to see the wide players chip in with goals, not just Sanchez. They need to deliver at least 10-15 each and carry the side when Sanchez has a dip in form. Can they do this, it’s debatable.

A move for Draxler would make sense and, for £30 million, would be a great buy by the club. He may not fire Arsenal to the title, but he would certainly add quality in the wide areas and is an upgrade to Walcott and Chamberlain.
